North Dakota Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) law
Must be at least 15 years of age.
● Must pass a safe driving knowledge test and a driving test.
● If under 16, driver’s education must also be completed prior to road testing.
● 30 hours of classroom, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training and 6 hours observation through the Department of Public Instruction, or
● 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training through a commercial driver training school approved by the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
● Teens 14 years of age will be required to hold an instruction permit for at least 12 months.
● Teens 15 years of age will be required to hold an instruction permit until age 16 or a minimum of 6 months, whichever is longer.
● 50 hours of supervised driving experience in addition to any formal driving school will apply to teens 14 and 15 years of age.
● No driving between sunset or 9 pm, whichever is later and 5 am, exceptions for work, school, or religious activity.
● Ban cellphone use while behind the wheel.
