Restricted License
After completing driver education (if under 16) and the holding period for the permit, your teen can take the road test.
Upon successful completion of the road test, your teen will be given a Restricted Class D License (under 16) or Unrestricted Class D License (16 or older). A restricted license limits your teen to driving the vehicle of a parent, legal guardian, grandparent, sibling, aunt or uncle. Your teen cannot have more passengers than the vehicle manufacturer’s suggested capacity.
Drivers under 16 are prohibited from driving between sunset or 9 p.m. (whichever is later) and 5 a.m. unless a parent, legal guardian or someone 18 years or older is in the front seat
There are exceptions for driving to and from work, school, and religious activities. All drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using a cell phone except in an emergency
The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) may waive the Class D Road test for students who complete the required driver education courses and classroom training.
NDDOT may randomly road test students who complete training at an approved driving school. If discrepancies or concerns are found, the driving program’s approval to have the road test waived will be rescinded.
Not all driver education programs are approved for the waiver program.
